When my husband and I made the decision, early in 2021, to emigrate back to my home country of New Zealand I wanted to leave a small token of gratefulness for our students, family and friends who had supported us for so many years.
Something that would not be lost in a drawer or discarded promptly I decided upon a suitcase sticker; it would be useful in spotting your suitcase immediately at airports and an original gift but needed to be distinctive and unique. Suitcases mean travel and in particular airplanes so with a nod to the fact that the kiwi bird is flightless I came up with the phrase “ Kiwi’s can fly”. For me it was also a reference to my belief that you can never dream big enough or fly high enough. Although I would be taking to the skies to move 20,000 kms to become a kiwi once more I felt certain that my friends and students would continue their own journeys affirmatively without our physical presence.
